LMS: The Biggest Building on Campus – and the Cheapest

The Chronicle of Higher Education says:

course-management software has become a new kind of campus building — a virtual one where online classes are held and new kinds of “hybrid” courses take place.

This is such an apt comparison that I’ve made it myself on several occasions.  Each semester, our LMS is attended by about 2/3 of our students for at least one course — and the stairways are almost never congested.  The system supports about half of all credit-hours.  That’s the biggest building on campus, by far.

So why is it so hard to come up with a couple of hundred thousand dollars in license fees to support it?
